Plaque is essential to initiate periodontitis. However, it is the hosts response to the plaque that determines the occurrence and severity of the periodontitis. Stress, along with smoking and poorly controlled diabetes is a modifying factor that changes the response to the plaque. This lecture will discuss what stress is, the mechanisms on how stress affects patients with periodontitis and how much impact stress has on periodontal patients. I will then share what stresses me out as a specialist periodontist for more than 20 years.
