Smile New Zealand is a joint initiative run annually by the New Zealand Dental Association and Southern Cross Health Trust.

As part of this intitative, low income adults were eligible for free dental treatment in September 2018. People who hold a community services card and have urgent dental problem but are struggling to see a dentist received free dental care by volunteer NZDA dentists.

The free appointments, about 30-40 minutes each, allowed patients to receive one dental treatment ranging from filling, extraction, relief of pain or infection to preventative care such as fluoride applications or a scale and polish.

"Smile NZ Free Dental Days in its fourth year was the largest yet, with 80 dentists volunteering to treat 851 low income adults with 1199 dental procedures"

The dates and location for 2019 free dental days will be announced later in the year once they are confirmed.
