As the trusted voice for dentists and dental specialists, NZDA has been advocating on behalf of dental professionals and members of the public since it was first established in 1905. Being united in helping the public make informed choices about their dental care, providing services which enhance the profession and advocating on behalf of dental professionals, the NZDA’s role is to Represent, Support, Advance, and Inform.

How you will make an impact:
As the Association embarks on its cultural journey, we are seeking a senior advisor that can help our profession navigate through Te Ao Māori in a respectful, impactful and meaningful way. With a vision of Supporting dentists to improve the oral health of New Zealand; and a commitment to ​equitable access to oral health care for all New Zealanders, NZDA is seeking an experienced and trusted Senior Tikanga Advisor on a casual contract basis to help us achieve those aspirations. 

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

  • Provide cultural advice and support to the NZDA Board, Staff, Advisory Council, Branches and Working Groups on kaupapa, hui and mahi where tikanga Māori is necessary to establish and maintain respectful relationships with Iwi and hapū 
  • Provide advice on NZDA’s work on cultural safety and competence 
  • Applying Tikanga Māori where required in problem-solving oral health issues
  • Strong leadership skills within Te Ao Māori and a connection to own iwi, hapū and whānau 
  • Supporting the Association’s commitment to equitable access to oral health care for all New Zealanders 
  • Working with Māori stakeholders and developing enterprising relationships that deliver better oral health for Aotearoa New Zealand

WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THIS ROLE:

  • Relevant qualification(s) to the role 
  • Fluency in Te Reo Māori 
  • Deep understanding of Te Tiriti of Waitangi
  • Expertise in Tikanga, Kawa and a deep understanding of all aspects of Te Ao Māori 
  • Existing extensive networks within iwi, hapū and whānau 
  • A basic understanding of the oral health sector 
  • Efficient time management and multi-tasking skills 
  • Innovative leadership skills and an interest in influencing change 
  • Strong analytical and interpersonal skills, and able to communicate with a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds
  • An alignment with the NZDA values

IT'S A BONUS IF YOU ALSO BRING:

  • An oral health qualification 
  • An understanding of the New Zealand Health System, the current Health Reforms and the place of Oral Health within both
  • An understanding of the New Zealand Political System and ability to act as a spokesperson when/where required 
  • Experience dealing with the media 

This is a pivotal role within NZDA, which designed to be a hybrid role both working out of NZDA’s purpose-built facility in Ellerslie, Auckland, and remotely (by mutual agreement). The team are collegial, and the role is well remunerated.
