The Big Day Out is a teaching day for dentists. Mr Derek Goodisson ( Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon) will perform 2 live oral surgeries in the morning where dentists are able to observe and ask questions during the surgeries. Discussion of the complete surgical setup will be had, with a question and answer session at the completion of the surgeries. In the afternoon there will be a guest speaker - Mr Brenton Wilson, who will provide a presentation on Orofacial infections. Discussion time will complete the day.

Learning outcomes

To provide the attending dentists with practical and informative guidelines for best practice for oral/maxillofacial surgeries and post operative infection prevention and control.

Mr Derek Goodisson MBChB, FRACDS(OMS), MDS, FDS, RCS(Ed), Maxillofacial Surgeon

Derek is the principal surgeon in the Hawkes Bay region for head and neck cancer, facial deformity surgery both accident-related, congenital and oral surgery. He also has a sub-speciality interest in skin cancer management. Derek is an active member of a number of College committees, including Australia and New Zealand Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (ANZAOMS) and the British equivalent (BAOMS). He is an AOCMF Faculty member and works nationally on the Dental Council and Medical Council of New Zealand advisory panels

Mr Brenton Wilson MBBS(Hons), BDS, FRACDS(OMS) Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

Brenton (BJ) Wilson is an Australian and New Zealand trained oral and maxillofacial surgeon. He practises the full breadth of general scope oral and maxillofacial surgery. With a keen interest in teaching, he has been involved with a number of universities, particularly anatomy education. He is based in Tauranga and regularly travels to Hawke’s Bay to help at Scott Clinic and the public hospital.
