NZDA Young Dentist Webinar Series 2024 [3] Special Care Dentistry Managing patients with complex medical needs can be challenging, particularly when it comes to treatment planning and decision making. This webinar will focus on the management and treatment planning considerations of medically complex patients. Often, when it comes special care dentistry, we need to be able to adjust our treatment planning to provide the care that is most appropriate for that patient. We will discuss the impact of common medical conditions and medications, and how to tailor your care to meet your patient’s needs. The aim of this webinar will be to provide some practical knowledge in order for you to confidently manage these more complex patients, as well as recognising when to refer. This series is ONLY available for graduates within their first five years of practice.

Speaker

Dr Emma Jefferies

Following graduation from Otago in 2015, I moved to Christchurch where I worked as a Dental House Officer at the Christchurch Hospital Dental Service for two years. During this time, I had some exposure to special care dentistry, which sparked my interest in this area. Following my House Officeryears, I started a position as a senior dentist in the special needs team, while also working part time in private practice. I completed my post graduate DClinDent is Special Needs Dentistry in 2021 while continuing to work at the Christchurch Hospital Dental service. I am passionate about providing care to people with a range of special needs, with a particular interest in providing accessible care to high needs and vulnerable adults as well as individuals with complex medical problems.
