The day will conclude with a bar shout hosted by the NZ Regional Committee Chair.

Professor Emeritus Alison Rich

Professor Emeritus Alison Rich has recently retired as Professor of Oral Pathology at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Otago, New Zealand and Head of the Department of Pathology at the Dunedin Medical School. Alison is a registered specialist in oral pathology in New Zealand and was Head of the Oral Pathology Centre, the oral pathology diagnostic service run by the University of Otago. She is the Immediate-Past-President of the International Association for Oral Pathology and past Chair and past Chief Examiner of the Faculty of Oral Pathology, Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. Her research interests relate mainly to oral cancer and she was the Leader of the Oral Molecular and Immunopathology Group at the Faculty of Dentistry. She was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2023.

Dr Morris Wong

Dr Morris Wong was born and raised in Palmerston North and graduated with a BSc from Massey University in 1985. Following a post-graduate Diploma, he entered the School of Dentistry at Otago University, where he completed a BDS in 1990. His first year working was as Dental House Surgeon at Napier Hospital followed by locum dental positions in Private dental practice. Morris practices all aspects of periodontics and dental implants, and is a member of the New Zealand Dental Association, New Zealand Society of Periodontology, Australia New Zealand Academy of Periodontology, Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, American Academy of Periodontology, and the International Team for Implantology.

Dr James Talbot

Dr James Talbot graduated with BDS (credit 1993) and then worked in Oral Surgery/Hospital departments in NZ, Australia and the UK. Gaining FDS RCS (Oral Surg 1998). Completed MSc Conservative Dentistry with Distinction 2005 (London) and then worked as an Associate Specialist in Restorative Dent. at the Royal London Hospital. Returning to NZ and becoming a partner at the Wellington Dental Practice 2007. He has a full-time referral-based practice, working part-time at Hutt Hospital.

Professor Alistair Knott

Alistair Knott is Professor of Artificial Intelligence at Victoria University of Wellington. He has been an AI and computational linguistics researcher for 30 years. He studied Philosophy and Psychology at Oxford University, then obtained MSc and PhD degrees in AI at the University of Edinburgh, then moved to New Zealand, working first at Otago University and now at Victoria University of Wellington. He co-founded Otago University’s Centre for AI and Public Policy, where he worked on Government uses of AI, and on the impact of AI on jobs and work. He now co-leads the Global Partnership on AI’s project on Social Media Governance. Ali has also contributed to the Christchurch Call’s Algorithms Workstream, and to work on AI policy at the Forum for Information and Democracy. He was on the expert panel for the report on AI and Healthcare in New Zealand, recently released by the Prime Minister’s Chief Science Advisor.
