Mastering the Basics of Implant Dentistry

Study Club Description: This is aimed at those general practitioners who would like to start restoring dental implants in their practice but have previously had only limited or no experience. The focus is treatment planning and restoration for simple tooth implants and implant bridge with analogue and Intraoral scanning. The study club has been designed to assist participants with incorporating dental implant restoration into their practice, with practical and easy to follow guidelines that you can apply immediately.

Learning outcomes

▪ Introduction and treatment planning: Case selection, treatment planning (prosthodontic and surgical), treatment sequencing for single tooth implant cases ▪ Fixture head impression: How to obtain predication fixture head impressions of a single tooth dental implant, includes hands on demonstration on models ▪ Definitive Restoration: Screw retained vs cement retained crowns, checking and fitting the definitive restoration, potential problems and pitfalls and how to avoid them during fitting of the final abutment crown

Dr Mark Ma BDS, DClinDent (Pros)

Dr Mark Ma (Prosthodontist) graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Otago in 2016 and worked in private practice before completing the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Prosthodontics) at the University of Melbourne. His thesis involved a literature review and the development of a novel instrument-based assessment tool for sleep bruxism. Although Mark is passionate about all aspects of prosthodontics, his special interests are in removable prosthodontics, fixed removable prosthodontics (conventional and implant based) and the management of orofacial pain.

Dr Jesslyn Praganta BDS, PGDipClinDent (Oral Surgery), DClinDent (Oral Surgery)

Jesslyn completed her BDS from the University of Otago in 2012. She worked as a Dental House Surgeon at the University of Otago and Dunedin Hospital before joining a cosmetic dental clinic in Wellington where she developed her interest in aesthetic dentistry. In between her private practice in Wellington, she completed a Diploma in Oral Surgery (Distinction). In 2020, she returned to Dunedin to complete the Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry (Oral Surgery) before finally joining Fernbrae House as a specialist Oral Surgeon. Jesslyn also works part-time as a Senior Professional Practice Fellow at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Otago. Her research interest is in postoperative pain and swelling management, and the use of the platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in Oral Surgery, specifically in third molar surgery. One of her clinical special interests is restoring a healthy smile for patients with terminal teeth using dental implants or other prostheses. She routinely works in collaboration with the local dentists, specialists, and dental technicians. She takes pride in providing the highest quality surgery in a gentle and relaxing environment for all her patients.
