Management of Dentin Hypersensitivity: The Recipe for Success

Dentinal hypersensitivity (DH) is a prevalent clinical issue typically linked to exposed dentinal surfaces. This condition can be mitigated through the application of remineralization agents, which function to obstruct fluid movement within the dentin tubules. The penetration of particles into these tubules, coupled with a gradual release of calcium and phosphate ions, can facilitate the mineralization of a substance that closely resembles the mineral makeup of dentin. Treatment options available for alleviating sensitivity encompass the use of dentifrices, resins, mouthwashes, chewing gums, suitable for both home and professional settings. One method for achieving relief from sensitivity involves the occlusion of exposed tubules, thereby restricting fluid movement within them. Various forms of calcium phosphates, which have compositions and structures similar to the mineral constituents of dentin, have been suggested as occluding agents and for the purpose of dentin remineralization. These include Bioglass phosphate, tetracalcium phosphate, dicalcium phosphate, nano-hydroxyapatite, and amorphous calcium phosphate. This presentation will discuss the different causes of dentin hypersensitivity and the available treatment options.
