To practice dentistry in New Zealand we have a requirement to understand Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the application of the principles of Te Tiriti in our practice. (DCNZ 3(a) Kaiakatanga ahurea Cultural competence). How do we (and Lumino) meet our obligations to these principles and what does it mean for us in our everyday practising life?

Identify ways in which cultural safety enhances patient care, particularly for Māori patients, and how it aligns with the obligations under Te Tiriti. Explore how Lumino and dental professionals meet obligations under Te Tiriti Understand how Lumino, as an organisation, upholds the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi within its clinical and operational practices. Learn how individual dental practitioners can incorporate these principles in their daily practice to improve patient experiences and health outcomes. Develop practical strategies to apply Te Tiriti principles in everyday dental practice Identify practical approaches for engaging with Māori patients and communities in ways that promote partnership and respect. Learn to integrate culturally appropriate communication, respect for Māori health perspectives (hauora Māori), and practices that promote equity in dental care. Enhance patient-centered care through cultural competence and safety Understand the importance of culturally safe care in building trust and rapport with patients from diverse backgrounds. Dr Cushla Batchelor-Hynd BSc, BDS

Cushla graduated from Otago University in 2005, she is a member of the NZDA, Te Ao Mārama (the NZ Māori Dental Association) and has iwi affiliations to Te Arawa, Tuhoe and Tainui. She joined the Lumino whanau in Hamilton 2014, and five years ago moved back to the Bay of Plenty taking up the position of Lead Dentist at Lumino InCity in Rotorua. She enjoys all aspects of general dentistry and the challenges of working back in her small hometown. Cushla likes to play golf which she plays rather badly and spends a lot of her weekends in her macadamia and avocado orchard cutting grass and fighting blackberry.
