Infection Prevention and Sterilisation

Sterilisation and disinfection are important for both personnel safety and patient safety. All processes should be based on a philosophy of risk management and quality assurance. The philosophy of how an item is used, stored, contaminated and reused or disposed determines the optimal method of sterilisation and/or disinfection. The latest Australian and New Zealand standards (AS/NZS4815) stipulate that dental practices need to provide appropriate education and training for staff responsible for instruments. This workshop will cover: - Office Based Practice, the Standards and you - the technicalities of AS/NZ4815:2006 and AS/NZS 4187:2014. - A back to basics look at the micro-organisms that make Infection Control Necessary. - Standard precautions and associated key updates for successful sterilisation outcomes. - Policy and Procedures manuals - how, why and the importance of team implementation. - Hand Hygiene update - hand washing and ABHR use. - Personal Hygiene and Personal Protective Equipment requirements and use. - Reprocessing and handling of used instruments (reusable medical device). - Pre-cleaning for successful sterilisation - the critical step. - Disinfection vs. detergency. - Surface management protocols - clinical contact surfaces and general environment. - Instrument reprocessing - the overall process. - Sterilisation - packaging, loading, monitoring requirements and recording the process. - Validation - of both equipment, and the overall sterilisation process. Learning Objectives: - Discuss the basic principles of sterilisation and disinfection, including the importance of cleaning each/any item before a process is used. - Understand and practically apply Standard Precautions. - Highlight methods of sterilisation. - Highlight key principles for special considerations for disinfection and sterilisation issues, such as dental unit water lines and evacuation systems. - Be able to relate the NZDA Code of Practice for Infection Prevention and Control, and Dental Council Practice Standard in line with AS/NZ4815:2006 and/or AS/NZS4187:2014 within and around the dental clinic/environment.
