The identification and prompt treatment young, susceptible patients who present with advanced periodontal attachment loss is a conundrum that we continually face. Quite often, these patients present with little biofilm deposits which is disproportionate to their severity of periodontal destruction.

Learning outcomes

This lecture will discuss the aetiological evidence and clinical management approaches that may be useful for stabilising disease activity in these patients.

Dr Andrew Liaw, Periodontist BDS (Hons), DCD (Perio)

Dr Andrew Liaw completed his Bachelor of Dental Surgery at James Cook University in Cairns in 2016 and has worked all over Australia in both public and private practice. He was awarded Honours for his research in antibiotics in non-surgical periodontal therapy and later enrolled into a three-year specialist degree in Periodontology at the University of Queensland. During his training, Dr Liaw was a recipient of the Australian Periodontology Research Foundation and Australian Dental Research Foundation Grants and awarded the GJ Seymour ASP medallion for his publications on salivary epigenetic factors in periodontal diseases. He is actively involved in teaching and lecturing at the James Cook University Dental School. Dr Liaw is a strong advocate for providing the highest levels of patient service and practises all aspects of non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy, with special interests in mucogingival surgery, implant therapy, guided bone regeneration and sinus augmentation.
