Speakers

Professor Neil Meredith BDS (Guys); MSc (Eastman); PhD (Imperial College); PhD (Gothenberg)

Neil Meredith qualified at Guys hospital in 1982. Neil completed an MSc in Conservative Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Institute in London in 1988 and his first PhD at Imperial College in 1992. In 1993 he became Consultant, Senior Lecturer in Bristol Dental School and was recognized as a specialist in both Prosthodontics and Restorative dentistry by the General Dental Council. His research interests have focused around biomaterials and biomechanics. In 1992 he invented the use of Resonance Frequency Analysis to measure dental implant stability, a technique that has now become the international benchmark known as Osstell. He was awarded his second PhD from the University of Gothenburg for his work in 1996. Neil became Professor of Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials at the University of Leeds in 1997. Following his entrepeneurial spirit he invented an implant system, raised venture capital funding and founded a medical device company, Neoss, of which he was CEO from 2000-2011. 2011 has seen a return to academia when Neil joined the University of Queensland as Professor of Dental Implantology and Prosthodontics. He practices clinically as a surgeon and specialist prosthodontist. In 2015 Neil became Head of Dentistry at James Cook University, Cairns, Australia. In 2019 Neil left his university ties to work in specialist practice. He formed the Postgraduate Institute of Dental Surgery in March 2020 which focusses on accredited diploma and certificate programs of excellence in dental implantology. Neil also lectures internationally and is engaged in new technology and product developments

Dr Ian Sugden BDS (Sheffield); Diploma in Implant Dentistry (James Cook); RACDS (Ireland).

Ian Qualified BDS, University of Sheffield, 1980 and went into general practice, mostly NHS thud and blunder, seeing up to 50 patients a day. Facing burnout, I became a lecturer in restorative dentistry at The London Hospital, as it was then, in 1986. In 1988 Ian bought the University dental practice in Newcastle upon Tyne where he taught general restorative dentistry as an Associate Specialist at that University, developing an interest in endodontics. While in Newcastle he became the senior practitioner in the brand-new Vocational Training Scheme for new graduates in the North of England, becoming a board member of the Royal College of Surgeons. Ian also became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in General Dental Surgery in 1993 (by examination). Ian’s next move was in 1996 when he taught part time at the University of Manchester as a Clinical Teaching Fellow while still working in General Practice. In 2002 Ian moved to Townsville to work for Daryl Holmes, before you were 1300 Smiles - there only had 2 practices! Then we moved back to Manchester where he taught back at the University and building his referral practices around the city. Ian also completed the Diploma of Restorative Dentistry there. The call of the Australian lifestyle became too strong, and Ian moved to Brisbane 2012, originally to work for 1300-Smiles again, but moved to his current practice in 2013. Ian also taught at the University of Queensland. Ian has been restoring implants since the mid-90s, but decided he needed to place my own, so he did the original Diploma in Implant Dentistry in 2017 at James Cook University in Cairns after which he was asked to help teach the programme and have been doing so ever since. Ian has been doing full mouth rehabilitations since the mid-1980s, so it seemed logical for him to include full arch implants and did the Certificate in Full Arch Implant Dentistry.
