Reviewing the basic principles of endodontic treatment The latest trends, developments and techniques in the rapidly changing world of endodontics can be confusing and difficult to evaluate, especially for recent graduates at the beginning of their careers. This one-day lecture program aims to review the basic principles of endodontic treatment and prepare the general practitioner to perform endodontics on a routine and predictable basis.

Learning outcomes

Develop a systematic approach to the diagnosis of endodontic cases Understand the most effective clinical tests that will facilitate that correct diagnosis Improve endodontic outcomes by improving the accuracy of working length determination Identify the objectives in root canal preparation Recognize how these objectives can be met with modern instruments and techniques Understand the role of irrigation and medication in endodontic treatment Understand the goals of obturation and how to achieve them with different materials and techniques

Dr Elizabeth Lou (BDS, DClinDent) is an Endodontist in Sydney. She obtained her dental and specialist training from the University of Adelaide. She has been in involved with clinical teaching at the University of Adelaide and at the Westmead dental hospital.

Dr Peter Case

Dr Peter Case (NSW) was a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Australian Navy, serving as the Fleet Dental Surgeon, providing endodontic treatment and was one of the senior clinical mentors for the junior dental officers of the Australian Defence Force. Peter is the President of the Australian Society of Endodontology (NSW) and Secretary of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Endodontists.

Dr Robyn Thomas

Dr Thomas (BDS, MDSc, MRACDS(Endo), FPFA) has worked as a specialist endodontist in Sydney since 1986. Robyn has taught undergraduate endodontics since 1981 at the University of Sydney and Westmead Hospital, initially as a full-time academic and then as a visiting lecturer. In addition to working in private practice, she was a consultant endodontist to the Defence Force, working at HMAS Kuttabul for nearly 20 years and continues to treat many Defence members. She has given lectures to many professional organizations and has served on the executive of the ASE (NSW Branch) and ANZAE.

Dr Steven Cohn

Dr Steven Cohn AM is a specialist endodontist in Sydney. He has taught undergraduate and postgraduate endodontics at the University of Sydney and Westmead Hospital since 1979 and is the former Director of Postgraduate Endodontic Education at the University of Sydney. Dr Cohn is presently Adjunct Clinical Professor at the University of Puthisastra in Cambodia and Director of the Diploma in Endodontics program. In 2019 he founded the Cambodia Oral Health Partnership that provides dental care for children in Cambodia. Until recently Dr Cohn was a Federal ADA Media Advisor responsible for the development and delivery of educational content for the dental profession. In 1998 Steve started the first specific microscope training course for endodontists and endodontic postgraduate students in Australia. This course has run annually except for the Covid period. Since 2009 Steve, Dr Rick Spencer (and now Drs Sabrina Manickam and Tim McAnulty) and Ms Barbara Faulkner have conducted microscope courses for general practitioners. Steve also does hands on microscope training on an individual basis in dentist’s rooms. Dr Cohn also presents “hands on“ clinics on rubber dam utilisation with Dr Rick Spencer and Ms Barbara Faulkner emphasising rubber dam application in both endodontics and general practice. Steve has also made a rubber dam training videos for the ADA (NSW Branch) CPD and videos on endodontic diagnosis and treatment planning for the Federal ADA. Dr Cohn has also maintained a long interest in dental radiology. He was a consultant to the Dunvale and Rinn corporations and assisted with developing both the Rinn DS and DS Endo devices. He designed both the Snapex (1979) and TruView (2017) radiography systems, both specifically to be used for all endodontic and restorative procedures carried out under rubber dam. Steve regularly conducts “hands on” radiology workshops throughout Australia.
