John completed his dental degree (BDS) in Otago in 1992. He then held a dental house surgeon and registrar positions in Wellington for three years before travelling to the UK to further his professional experience. John returned to Dunedin in 1997 to commence his postgraduate training in oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS). He moved to Christchurch the following year and completed his medical degree and masters degree in oral and maxillofacial surgery, with distinction in 2001.
