Learning outcomes

By completing this course, you will be able to: • Understand key anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology relevant to safe sedation. • Explain sedation levels, associated risks, and legal/ethical responsibilities. • Apply infection control and aseptic techniques during sedation procedures. • Monitor sedated patients using essential equipment (capnography, pulse oximetry, ECG, BP). • Recognize early signs of complications and respond effectively to emergencies. • Work confidently as part of a sedation team, maintaining situational awareness and patient advocacy.

Stuart has over 30 years of experience in acute care as an ICU and Emergency Clinical Nurse Specialist and Critical Care Paramedic. He has worked across Australasia and Europe in hospital and pre-hospital settings, specialising as an instructor in advanced airway management and Rapid Sequence Induction. As a NZRC CORE Advanced Instructor, Stuart delivers advanced life support training to dental practices throughout the South Island.
