Speakers

Prof Ian Meyers Honorary Professor, School of Dentistry, The University of Queensland

Professor Ian Meyers is a general dental practitioner in Brisbane, and an honorary professor at The University of Queensland School of Dentistry. He has over forty years of combined experience in dental research and education, and with clinical dentistry in private practice, university clinics and hospital based dental clinics. He is a past President of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and the Queensland Branch of the Australian Dental Association. He is President-Elect of the Australasian section of the International College of Dentists, and a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International and Pierre Fauchard Academy. In 2017 he received the Order of Australia Medal for services to dentistry, professional associations, and tertiary education. Professor Meyers has extensive experience in comprehensive patient care, with special interests in diagnosis and management of the worn dentition, geriatric and aged care dentistry, adhesive restorative dental materials, fibre-reinforced composites, and the management of patients through minimum intervention dentistry.

Prof Tino Mercado Associate Professor, Oral Sciences (Periodontics), University of Otago

Tino is the President of Australia and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists (ANZAP 2024-2026). He was awarded the 2021 Australian Dental Association (ADA) Service Medallion Award for “his contribution to clinical periodontics, clinical periodontal research and dedication to teaching”. He is the founding President of the Filipino-Australian Dental Association (FADA), a group that supports Filipinos and promotes Filipino culture in Australia. FADA also organize dental symposiums and charity missions to remote areas of Australia and the Philippines. He is also the Perio Examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS)-NSW/ACT Regional Committee. He is the Chair for Pierre Fauchard Academy – New Zealand Division. Tino has a private practice at London Street Specialists Dunedin and Lake Hayes Queenstown, providing periodontal and implant services to the South Island of New Zealand. Tino holds an Associate Professor position at the Periodontal Post-Graduate Department at the University of Sydney, University of Queensland and Otago University. His publications dealt with periodontal prognostication, Periodontal Medicine, mucogingival surgical techniques and bone regeneration. His Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) topic was on regenerative management of peri-implantitis and management of recession around teeth and implants using autogenous and alternative tissues with biologically active products. His clinical research on maxillary anterior ridge preservation won Best Clinical Research at the 2021 Osteology World Symposium.

Dr John Hale Chief Technology Officer, BLIS Technologies, Senior Lecturer, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, University of Otago

John did his graduate studies studying oral streptococci under the supervision of Professor John Tagg at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, University of Otago in New Zealand. In this work, he identified and characterised bacterial anti-competitor molecules known as bacteriocin’s. Following this, he carried out post-doctoral research at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada) characterising the mode of action of these molecules and as a Research Fellow at Monash University’s School of Pharmacy (Melbourne, Australia) investigating the modes of resistance bacteria use against antimicrobial peptides. John joined Blis Technologies in 2011. As the Chief Technology Officer he oversees the R&D, Clinical, Regulatory and IP strategies for Blis. He also holds an adjunct Senior Lecturer position with the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, University of Otago, New Zealand.

Dr Shayden Bell Endodontist

Shayden is a specialist endodontist currently working in private practice in Hamilton. He trained in Otago, and his research is focused on vital pulp treatment in permanent teeth. Originally from Whakatane, Shayden moved to Dunedin to pursue his dental studies, graduating in 2017 with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery. He worked as a general dentist in Whitianga, Whakatāne and Opōtiki. In addition to his practical experience, Shayden recently graduated with a Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry from the University of Otago, further enhancing his expertise in endodontics.

Dr Tony Dey General Dentist, Founder of LANZ.Dental

Dr Tony Dey is an Auckland based dentist and entrepreneur with a variety of investments across the dental sector. Tony founded LANZ.Dental in 2003 growing it into New Zealand’s leading clinical dental recruiter and largest dental practice brokerage. He has bought, owned, grown and sold a number of practices and most recently was a founding shareholder of ‘The Dental Group’ now a 20 practice organisation that co-invests alongside dentists in dental practices across New Zealand. More of a fast follower into technology and digital media than a true early adopter Tony has leveraged his interest and knowledge in these areas to produce outsized growth within his practices. Originally in Ponsonby, Auckland where he grew a 1 chair failing practice into an 8 chair behemoth, selling to Lumino along the way. Joining Lumino’s leadership team after the sale Tony operated as the clinical lead for various digital initiatives including The Lumino Dental Plan, a chat bot, apps and social media. More recently Dr Dey has incorporated various AI tools, AI enabled hardware and software in his 5 practices he co-owns with The Dental Group across Auckland and Central Otago. These practices are using clinical and non-clinical Artificial Intelligence in an effort to improve both treatment and commercial outcomes.

Colleen Coulter New Zealand Manager, GC Corporation

Colleen Coulter is the NZ manager for GC Corporation, a company well known for its advances in glass ionomer cements and their commitment to dental research and development. Colleen has been involved in the dental industry for over 25 years and is a current member of the IADR (International Association of Dental Research), regularly attending their annual overseas research meetings. She has an advanced Diploma from Lincoln University but her major areas of interest include the material science, in particular with regards to adhesion, glass ionomer cements, and the prevention/remineralization side of dentistry. She is actively involved in training and education, with a presenting role at the University of Otago as well as being an invited speaker at numerous branch meetings, study group sessions and school and community dental service training events throughout New Zealand. Colleen was awarded an honorary NZDA membership in 2019, in recognition of the presentations undertaken around NZ and in service to training and continuing education in the dental community.

Nigel Beach Physiotherapist and Performance Consultant

Nigel Beach is a New Zealand physiotherapist and performance consultant with more than 25 years’ experience working with elite athletes (All Blacks, Wallabies, NRL, Australian Rugby League Team etc.) and corporate leaders. He is recognised for helping individuals overcome stress, pain, and performance plateaus by improving breathing, physiology, and nervous system regulation. Nigel integrates evidence-based techniques drawn from clinical practice and high-performance sport to help people sharpen focus, build resilience, and sustain wellbeing in demanding environments.
