Dr James Fernando

Dr James Fernando BDSc (Hons) (Melb), PhD

Dr. James Fernando is a dentist and dental academic, having completed his Doctor of Philosophy in 2018 researching chemical repair of the dental hard tissues (remineralisation). He is currently a Research Fellow of the Cariology Research group at the Melbourne Dental School. James has been in private practice for over 10 years and operates a dry mouth clinic in the Oral Medicine department at the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne. As an early career researcher, James has published in the Journal of Dentistry, Caries Research and Nature Scientific Reports. He has presented at numerous dental conferences both locally and internationally. He is a member of the European Organisation for Caries Research, the International Association for Dental Research and was a finalist in the 2018 CRCA Early Researcher showcase. James also teaches the cariology component of the Doctor of Dental Surgery and Bachelor of Oral Health courses at Melbourne Dental School. He is currently the Chair of the Oral Health Committee of the Australian Dental Association, Victorian branch. His research interests are the prevention of dental decay and dental erosion, as well as the clinical use of calcium- and fluoride-containing dental technologies.

Laureate Professor Eric C Reynolds

Laureate Professor Eric C Reynolds AO FICD FTSA FRACDS MASM

Laureate Professor Eric Reynolds AO is Chief Executive Officer and Research Director of the Oral Health CRC at the Melbourne Dental School, the University of Melbourne. For 16 years until 2015 Eric was Head of the Melbourne Dental School. He has lectured and published extensively and has chaired and participated in a wide range of professional committees and panels. He has 386 publications, with 31,586 citations and an h-index of 95. Eric was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for his service to community dental health in 2005. He received the Clunies Ross National Science and Technology award in 2002 and the Victoria Prize for Science in 2005. In 2011 he received the Distinguished Scientist Award from the International Association for Dental Research, and in 2015 the Leach Medal for research excellence and the Global Health Impact Award from the University of Melbourne. In 2016 he received the Award of Merit from the Australian Dental Association and in 2017 the Prime Minister’s Prize for Science Innovation. In 2019 he was elected Vice-President of the International Association for Dental Research and became President in July 2021. In 2020 he received the European Organisation for Caries Research Prize for outstanding scientific contribution and the American Academy of Periodontology Clinical Research Award.

Prof Ian Meyers

Prof Ian Meyers OAM, BDSc, FRACDS, FICD, FADI, FPFA

Professor Ian Meyers is a general dental practitioner in Brisbane, Australia and is an honorary professor at The University of Queensland School of Dentistry. Professor Meyers has over thirty five years of combined experience in dental research, clinical dentistry, private practice, university clinics and hospital based dental clinics. He is a Fellow and Board Member of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and of the International College of Dentists, and is a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He has served on numerous ADA national committees and is a long standing member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Australian Dental Journal. In 2017 he received the Order of Australia Medal for services to dentistry, to professional associations, and to tertiary education. Among his previous positions Professor Meyers has been the Colgate Chair of General Practice Dentistry at The University of Queensland, the Chief Dental Officer for Queensland Health, and President and CEO of the Queensland Branch of the Australian Dental Association. As a general dental practitioner, Ian Meyers has extensive experience in comprehensive patient care, and has a special interest in diagnosis and management of worn and broken down dentition, geriatric and aged care dentistry, adhesive restorative dental materials, fibre-reinforced composites, and the management of patients through minimum intervention dentistry. Ian lectures both nationally and internationally on these topics, and is a consultant to a number of dental companies.
