This lecture delves into the management of deep caries in permanent teeth, emphasising the need for evidence-based protocols, a multidisciplinary approach and consistency in practice. We will explore the new guideline which has been supported by funding from the Ministry of Health Oral Health Fund and is tailored for New Zealand clinicians. It draws on international best practice and has been developed collaboratively with contributions from clinicians who manage deep caries in a range of contexts and from different fields of dentistry in New Zealand.

The session also addresses the diagnostic challenges of current classification systems and provides insights into management of the exposed pulp and vital pulp treatment for teeth with irreversible pulpitis using hydraulic bioceramic cements. By integrating these guidelines and techniques, clinicians can more confidently approach these cases and make decisions which enhance patient outcomes including delaying or avoiding the need for root canal treatment.
