Overview: The goal of my short talk is to share my daily spiel, which involves explaining to patients what “gum disease” is, with a positive spin. Helping our patients achieve immaculate oral hygiene is the only way to achieve periodontal stability – knowing this (and how amazing their gums will heal), gets me really excited about delivering my homecare advice. My number one take-home message at the consultation visit is the introduction of interproximal brushing, which I will go into some detail.

Learning outcomes

Provide the branch members with more confidence in delivering homecare advice. Ensuring the advice given to patients is accurate and effective to allow for better oral health outcomes for all.

Dr Ellie Knight BDS (Otago), PGDipClinDent (Perio), DClinDent (Perio), MRACDS (PDS)

Ellie is a Specialist Periodontist based in Dunedin. She graduated from the University of Otago in 2005. Ellie completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Periodontology with Distinction in 2010, and a Doctorate in Clinical Periodontology in 2013. She is actively involved in providing education in NZ and internationally. She is nominated as a Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Otago University (2024-current), after having been a Colgate Senior Lecturer and Professional Practice Fellow (2014-2023).
