This webinar series updates the general dentist, helping them support their patients in their orthodontic journey from start to finish. Orthodontic Highlights 2024 [2] Is the koolaid safe to drink? Corporate claims and nerdy knowledge Modern clear aligner treatment is 26 years old. The evidence is (finally) coming in like a tsunami. What are your beliefs? Does the evidence support your thoughts? This presentation will briefly outline the refereed scientific research performed by a nerdy orthodontist in private practice who decided to ask these questions and then go and find the answers. With 3 dozen papers in the past 5 years and another 2 dozen currently in the pipelines there is plenty to share, if you are up for it! I will highlight the claims and evidence regarding aligner treatment based on up to the minute peer-reviewed evidence as well as surveys of aligner behaviour of orthodontists in Australia and New Zealand, and general dentists in Australia.

Dr Tony Weir

Tony Weir graduated with Bachelor of Dental Science (1st Class Honours) from the University of Queensland in 1983, followed by a Master of Dental Surgery (Orthodontics) from the University of Adelaide in 1991. He has worked in a private orthodontic practice from 1991-present, along with holding several other roles and being involved in postgraduate research. These include being an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland since 2017, a Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Adelaide from 2019, and a Honorary at the University of Otago. He has produced 33 publications on clear aligners to date. Married with 3 adult children, when he is not spending too much time on research, he likes to run ultramarathons, hike in jungles, mountains and deserts, and spend as much time as possible in Wanaka.
