In todays' evolving healthcare landscape, dentists play a crucial role in the management of medically complex patients. Providing comprehensive and compassionate care requires an understanding of each patient's needs, including any related medical conditions. This webinar series will explore a number of topics aimed at giving practical advice for dentists to navigate the challenges of treating patients with diverse medical needs in dental practice.

Learning outcomes

A presentation to outline dental management for this potentially complex group of people. This will include coverage of the various Cardiac conditions that need special consideration, the dental relevance of these patients' medications, special investigations that may be required for dental treatment and Guidelines currently available. The stages of completing dental treatment, from pre-operative planning, providing care in a safe manner, through to postoperative care will be discussed. The dental care of patients may need a collaborative approach with other health professionals for the best outcomes of treatment. The session aims to equip dental professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to safely and effectively manage the oral health of these patients.

Dr Sunethra Tennekoon BDS, (Otago) DClinDent, Special Needs Dentistry, (Otago)

Sunethra is a Specialist in Special Needs Dentistry currently working at Waikato Hospital's Specialist Dental Unit at Waikato Hospital. Her undergraduate and Specialist degrees were obtained at Otago University. She has worked as a General Dental Practitioner for 17 years and in the Hospital Dental setting for 16 years. During that time, Sunethra has also taught undergraduate Dentistry in the clinical setting for 10 years.
