Introduction

As part of my studies into the history of anaesthesia in New Zealand I compiled a Bibliography of Anaesthesia-Related Articles in the New Zealand Medical Journal (1887- 2000) in 2003. This was published by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists on DVD in 2005. Last year an article on the history of the Dental Nurses’ School in Auckland[1], stated that nitrous oxide was first used in this country in Wellington in 1874. This reference was from a History of Dentistry in New Zealand[2] and from there I progressed to the New Zealand Dental Journal, which contains many anaesthesia-related articles.

The initial issue of the New Zealand Dental Journal in July 1905 contains a report of the first Conference of the New Zealand Dental Association. This took place in Wellington in June 1905. The then President, H P Rawson, described how his brother first used nitrous oxide in 1874, in Wellington, and believed this was the first time it had been used in this country. A later article by R F Stockwell[3] tells of Ashton Myers administering the gas in 1874, too, but in Invercargill, and he describes other pioneers. The journal contains many papers on nitrous oxide, and not surprisngly there’s an emphasis on local and block anaesthesia, from 1905 right up to 2006, with cocaine, through Tutocaine, Novocain (procaine), Butyn (butacaine), Monocaine (butethamine) and Xylocaine (lignocaine) to the more modern agents. Intravenous anaesthesia and sedation, hypnosis and acupuncture are all featured. The teaching of anaesthetics to dental students has its place, from journals as early as 1906[4]. There are legal reports of teeth inhaled during anaesthesia and an Editorial[5] on the administration of anaesthetics in dental rooms, with concern that there might not be facilities for heart massage. That was in the journal of 1919!

In this compendium I have endeavoured to include all papers, letters to the editor, reports, abstracts and book reviews relating to anaesthesia and pain relief in the New Zealand Dental Journal from its first issues in 1905 until the end of 2006. Hopefully, this work will be of assistance to those researching anaesthesia history in New Zealand.

Explanatory Notes

In the main text, entries are arranged alphabetically, surnames are accompanied by initials, and discrimination between male and female authors is not attempted. Each article appears under the author or first-cited writer where there are multiple authors. Authors other than first-cited are included in the main body of the work, referred to first-cited authors. Multiple publications by a writer are arranged chronologically. Following the author’s name is the title of the paper, the year, the volume of the journal, the number of the issue (from 1905 until the end of 1970) and the page numbers. Letters to the Editor are indicated by “letter” in brackets. Following the main authored section, Editorials are listed chronologically, then Proceedings, Reports and Legal (alphabetically) and a Miscellaneous section with the first part arranged alphabetically by authors, while the second, anonymous, group is set up alphabetically by title. Book Reviews follow, arranged alphabetically by book author, as in the main text. There are three indexes - one each for authors, subjects and years.
