Use of Botulinum-A Toxin in Dentistry
The March 2010 meeting of the NZDA Board approved a Position Statement regarding the use of botulinum toxin in dentistry. On Members' behalf, the NZDA entered correspondence with the Dental Council of New Zealand to clarify dentists' responsibilities. The use of botulinum toxin is considered an advanced area of practice and dentists are expected to comply with the Dental Council's regulations in this area. Guidelines for the Use of Fluorides
The New Zealand Guidelines Group (NZGG) funded by the Ministry of Health has produced evidence-based best practice guidelines for the use of fluorides in New Zealand. The aim of these guidelines is to help health care practitioners, consumers and policy makers make decisions about the use of fluorides in the New Zealand context.There are guidelines that address the use of topical fluoride treatments including fluoride toothpastes, fluoride varnishes, fluoride mouthrinses, fluoride gels and foams and also for the use of fluoride tablets. New Drug Prescription Rates
On September 1st 2008, the Government extended access to $3 co-payments on fully subsidised medicines. The dentist will be responsible for ascertaining whether the patient is eligible for $3 co-payments and for coding their prescriptions correctly. The pharmacist is entitled to rely on the dentist coding to indicate the correct level of co-payment that should be charged.
